L’arreditore e progettista francese René Herbst studiò architettura a Francoforte e Londra. Dopo diversi viaggi ha lavorato dal 1919 a Parigi come progettista. 1925 progettò alcuni stand all’Esposizione universale a Parigi. Facceva parte della fondazione "Union des Artistes Modernes" (UAM) insieme con Francis Jourdain, Robert Mallet-Stevens, Raymond Templier e Hélène Henry. Tale fondazione fu responsabile per l’organizzazione di diverse mostre sotto l’aspetto "Forme funzionali – nuovo razionalismo". 1930 progettò la "Sedia copertura in nichel" la quale aveva previsto per la sua propria ditta di arredamento a Parigi, Etablissements René Herbst. La struttura portante di questa sedia è in tubo d’acciaio nichel-placcato, sedile e schienale con tiranti elastici rivestiti in tessuto in colore nero, bianco, blu, rosso e giallo. L’altezza di questa sedia funzionale arriva a 81 cm. Un’altro suo mobile famoso del 1930 era la "Chaiselongue", anche quella con sedile e schienale in tiranti elastici.
